Familiarity is useful but not sufficient
Working within an organization can provide context, but it does not automatically establish eligibility for every internal opportunity. The public 2025 Maintenance Supervisor notice illustrates a process with a specifically named eligible-title audience. A September 2026 depot-leadership posting contains its own internal-candidate conditions. These are separate dated examples, not a universal policy statement for all MTA moves.
Read the current notice for the exact role and employee category. Do not rely on a colleague's recollection of a different recruitment cycle. This publication cannot verify employment status, performance conditions, seniority, title eligibility or any individual permission. It can help distinguish those questions from the evidence of skills and experience.
Use two separate lists
The first list concerns formal conditions stated by the notice. The second concerns the work evidence you can honestly present. Keep a third small box for unanswered questions. Mixing the lists can lead someone to argue that strong experience cancels a formal condition, or that satisfying a condition guarantees readiness for the responsibilities. Neither conclusion follows automatically.
Imagine a hypothetical employee who has helped coordinate a project but is researching a supervisory role. Their project example may show organization and communication. It does not by itself prove authority for staffing decisions or satisfaction of an internal service requirement. A precise account identifies the contribution and asks about the remaining condition through the official route.
Reframe experience without disclosing records
An internal candidate may have access to information that is inappropriate for a portfolio or informal discussion. Use only material that is permitted for the actual recruitment process. Keep private employee matters, restricted operating information and internal system screenshots out of public career notes and correspondence with this website.
A public-safe preparation summary can describe the kind of responsibility, the authorized action and the result at a suitable level. If you are unsure what can be shared, seek the employer's guidance. The convenience of having a document available does not establish permission to redistribute it.
Research the new responsibility
An internal move can change the work rather than simply increase its scale. Ask what decisions the new role owns, what interfaces it manages and what evidence the selection process seeks. A familiar department name should not substitute for reading the current duties. Prepare for the role described, not a remembered version of it.
The useful output is a notice-specific readiness question sheet: formal conditions to verify, examples to prepare and responsibilities to understand better. It does not predict promotion or resolve employment rights. It helps an employee approach a potential move with clearer evidence and fewer assumptions.
